Ingredients
  • 1 medium onion chopped fine
  • 1 Tablespoon garlic minced
  • 2 Tablespoons cooking fat coconut oil, butter, ghee
  • 1 14.5 ounce can chopped tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 2 Tablespoons honey or maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 Tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon mustard powder

Instructions
  1. Heat cooking fat in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook onions and garlic for 8 minutes or until soft and lightly brown.
  2. Add all remaining ingredients and mix well.
  3. Bring to a light simmer and reduce heat to medium low. Simmer uncovered, and stirring occasionally, for 30 minutes until sauce thickens.
  4. Remove from heat and puree until smooth with an immersion/stick blender.
  5. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Store covered in the refrigerator and use within 2 weeks.
Recipe Notes

For faster pureeing with less splatter, try blending the sauce in a large mason jar. Be sure to use an oven mitt--the glass will get hot! You can keep the sauce in the jar for easy storage.
